How to make a trap beat with AI

To make a trap beat with AI, choose the Trap genre and one of its four vibes (Hard, Melodic, Hyper or Plugg), optionally add elements such as 808 Bass and Hi-Hat, set the BPM and key, and generate. In DeckBe's Beat Lab the result is a 30-second instrumental trap beat, usually ready in 30-60 seconds, with no prompt to write.

What makes a beat sound like trap?

Trap rests on three things: a long 808 bass that often slides between notes, fast hi-hats with rolls and triplets, and a hard snare or clap with a half-time feel. On top sits a dark or melodic line, often piano, bells or a choir. The tempo is fast, but because the snare lands in half time, the groove feels half as fast. An AI beat maker lets you choose these ingredients by name instead of programming them hit by hit.

How do you make a trap beat with AI, step by step?

  1. Open Beat Lab in rap mode. Go to Beat Lab in your browser or the DeckBe app for iOS or Android.
  2. Choose Trap. Or pick another style from the Trap group: Melodic Trap, Cloud Rap, Emo Rap, Phonk, PluggnB or Rage.
  3. Pick a vibe. Trap has four vibes, each with its own BPM range and default key (see the table below).
  4. Choose up to four elements (optional). For a classic trap sound, try 808 Bass (Sliding or Glide), Hi-Hat (Triplet Roll or Fast Roll), Snare/Clap (Trap Snare or Clap) and Melody (Dark Piano, Bell or Trap Choir). A short sketch plays as you pick each one.
  5. Set BPM, key and mode. The BPM control stays inside the vibe's range, the key uses the Camelot wheel (for example 7A or 8A), and the mode is FULL, LOOP or ONE-SHOT.
  6. Generate and listen. The beat is usually ready in 30-60 seconds, and each try uses 7 usage credits.
  7. Download or keep building. On a computer or Android device, paid plans download the beat as WAV with the BPM and key in the file name; on iPhone it plays in the app. You can also turn it into a full track (see below).

Elements narrow the sound: when you pick any, Beat Lab steers the beat toward only the groups you picked (drums, bass, melody, atmosphere). So if you pick 808 Bass but no drum element, it aims to leave the drums out. Leave the elements empty and the vibe's default sound is used.

Which trap vibe and BPM should you pick?

Melodic135-1451408A
Hyper155-1651607A
Plugg125-1351309A

The rest of the Trap group widens the palette: Melodic Trap (128-150 BPM; Emotional, Arabesk, Dark, Dreamy), Phonk (128-150; Memphis, Drift, House Phonk, Brazilian), Rage (142-170), PluggnB (128-145), Cloud Rap (125-160) and Emo Rap (128-155). Drill (135-150) and UK Drill (135-148) sit in their own group. For more on the low end, read the 808 beat guide.
